Welcome to the Airevale United Reformed Churches’ Website
Brotherton - Castleford - Knottingley
At the Airevale Group of United Reformed Churches, we offer a warm welcome to visitors,
new residents and old friends. Irrespective of whether you adhere to the URC, another
Christian Denomination or haven’t been to church before, or in ages, we will be delighted
to see you.
We are part of the United Reformed Church which was formed in 1972 by the amalgamation
of the Presbyterian Church of England & Wales, the Congregational Church of England
and the Church of Christ, the latter joining in 1981. They were joined in 2000 by
the Congregational Union of Scotland. The Airevale Group is part of the Yorkshire
Synod in the United Reformed Church, which is one of 13 Synods covering the whole
country and bearing witness to our faith.
The URC is present in communities throughout the country. Its members engage in active
Christian leadership in peace, justice and human rights as well as having pastoral
and educational roles. Whilst differing from both the Anglican and Roman Catholic
Churches in not having a hierarchy of bishops and archbishops, we work closely with
them and also other non-conformist Christian denominations and faiths.
Please take some time to browse our site. There are sections on each of the three
churches – Castleford, Knottingley and Brotherton – giving further information on
each of them. Do come back often. If you are unable to attend any of the churches,
you will find regular updates here. If you don’t know much about the United Reformed
Church in particular or Christianity in general, we suggest you go straight to the
“Getting Started” section.
We hope you will visit us soon at one of the churches!
